background information
During a very difficult time during lockdown, I came across an amazing woman Jodi Cohen who has done decades of research on the clinical use of essential oils. At Khiron Clinics we use the Polyvagal Theory as an intervention in the treatment of trauma. Jodi has a sound understanding of the Nervous System and has created a Parasympathetic blend that can be applied directly to the Vagus Nerve. The active ingredients are Lime and Clove. Lime helps to lift depressive states, lower anxiety, and stress, helps to balance hormones, kills some bacteria, triggers the release of neurotransmitter acetylcholine to slow the heart rate, aids in the recovery of damaged tissues, protects from inflammation, which in turn supports the immune system. Clove is a powerful anti-bacterial, antiviral, and antifungal agent. It can help heal infections and numbs pain. It can also help to increase energy, relieve fatigue, stimulate circulation, and lower blood pressure.
The Vagus Nerve Blend is used as a roller directly on the Vagus Nerve on the sides of the neck and also on the folds of the ear where you can find the auricular branch of the Vagus nerve. To find the Vagus nerve in the neck, take your hands to the back of your head behind each ear you will feel the bones on the skull and spine (Occipital scull and C1). Find the soft tissue of the big SCM (sternocleidomastoid) muscle that starts behind the ear (mastoid process)and runs down either side of the neck. Also look for the jugular vein. The Vagus Nerve sits in-between these two structures. Roll the oil anywhere around the muscles and skin that run down from behind the ears to the collar bones aiming to get behind and under the big muscle of the SCM.
I use it in the Vagus Nerve Workshop, on Retreats, and in sessions at Khiron Clinics residential trauma centre.
I have modified the recipe but give thanks and credit to Jodi for helping me and the often stressed and traumatised people that I work with for this direct, accessible, effective intervention that has helped us. Essential Oils to Boost Brain and Heal the Body by Jodi Cohen
